Health Screening in Youth Athletes: Why It's Critical

Prof. Dr. Bülent BayraktarJuly 20, 20247 min

Understanding pre-participation evaluation and age-specific considerations for young athletes during growth and development phases.

Health screening for youth athletes requires a different approach than adult screening due to the unique risks associated with growth and development. The musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, and psychological development of young athletes must be monitored regularly.

Pre-participation health evaluation is a comprehensive examination conducted before a child begins sports participation. This assessment should include detailed medical history, physical examination, cardiovascular screening, musculoskeletal evaluation, and measurement of growth and development parameters.

Growth plate injuries represent one of the most vulnerable areas in young athletes. During the growth phase, cartilage plates at the ends of bones are more susceptible to injury than in adults. Therefore, pain and complaints in young athletes must be taken seriously and evaluated with appropriate imaging methods.

Growth-related injuries such as Osgood-Schlatter disease, Sever's disease, and apophysitis are frequently encountered in youth athletes. These conditions can usually be managed through training load modification, flexibility exercises, and appropriate rest.

The Child Well-being and Child Protection in Sports Program, which Prof. Dr. Bayraktar initiated through the Turkish Football Federation in 2010, holds the distinction of being Turkey's first legally established program in this area. The program aims to protect not only the physical health of youth athletes but also their psychological and social welfare.

Family and coach education play key roles in protecting youth athlete health. All stakeholders must be educated about recognizing signs of overtraining, providing appropriate nutritional support, and ensuring adequate sleep and rest periods.
